Geodon (ziprasidone) is an antipsychotic drug prescribed for the treatment of manic depression and schizophrenia. Your health care provider can recommend taking this medicine for other conditions. It’s not recommended to take Geodon if you have a history of a heart attack (within the last 6 months), uncontrolled heart failure or a history of Long QT syndrome. Do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs to avoid interaction with Geodon. Combination of Geodon with any of the following medicines can cause a heart rhythm disorder: antibiotics, heart rhythm medicine, droperidol, arsenic trioxide, levomethadyl acetate, tacrolimus, medicines to treat psychiatric disorders and some others. If the patient has dementia the doctor may prescribe a lower dosage or recommend a different medicine, as Geodon has been reported to cause pneumonia, heart failure and sudden death in such patients. Side effects of this medicine are usually mild and well-tolerated. They include headache, muscle pain, mild skin rash, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness, anxiety, twitching and dizziness. If these symptoms change in intensity or worsen over time contact your doctor. |
